New high-tech company offers super-fast computing without a computer
BY BOB MASSEY, Florida Weekly Correspondent
Imagine being able to access your computer’s desktop without the computer. No hard drive to crash. Unlimited space. If your home or office loses power, you don’t lose any information, even if you haven’t backed it up. And you can access your desktop at any time from anywhere in the world on any device, with only an Internet connection.
This is information technology of the future. In fact, it essentially eliminates the need for on-site servers or even an IT department. And it’s at the core of a startup company called Zypha Corp. (dgeist@zypha.com), whose offices will be located in the SunTrust building, 18501 Murdock Circle, Port Charlotte, starting in July.
I spoke with company President and CEO Darryl Keys, as well as VP of Sales and Marketing Daniel Geist, who promptly gave me a demonstration of the technology known as “desktop virtualization.” With a device called aThin Client, which looks like a router, all that’s required is a keyboard, mouse and monitor to enable the user to log in to a cloud-based account. The virtual desktop will contain all the user’s folders, files and programs, just like an ordinary computer desktop. But all the data is stored on the cloud, and the user can even purchase access to software programs without having to buy them outright.
“We’ve contracted with a data center in Tampa,” said Mr. Keys who hails from the UK, where the business is based. “All the equipment is currently being installed there.”
The speed in which the system operates is lightning fast, far faster than when I pull up a web page or type in a Word document on my own computer. Also, it doesn’t require an expensive, high-speed connection.
“The beauty of it is that it only uses about 5 percent of the electricity that your computer would use,” Geist said.
Mr. Keys noted that when he had started a previous company, it cost $20,000 just to set up the IT.
“By the time you’ve invested in the server, PCs, laptops, Microsoft exchange, licenses for software products, cabling, IT consultancy — it takes a lot of time and money by the time you’re finished,” he said. “If something goes wrong, you have to repair it or replace it. You have to continually monitor your software. If your hard drive fries and your system is not backed up, you lose everything. Even with a new laptop, you have to reinstall your programs.”
Zypha’s 24/7 services solve all those issues.
The partners said they are targeting small- to medium-sized businesses in the area, as they stand to benefit most.
“We’ve decided to base our headquarters in Port Charlotte,” Geist said, “because we not only love this community, but it’s strategically located to serve all of Southwest Florida.”
